“TASTE THE ATLANTIC – A SEAFOOD JOURNEY”

The student from the midlands called last minute to book a stall at the Burren Slow Food Festival. On the Saturday morning, he arrived with his father, unpacked his pieces of art and decorated his stall in the Pavilion in Lisdoonvarna. He surely hoped to sell some of his pieces, but he definitely did not expect to take the limelight and talk in front of an audience.
One of the chefs present at the festival, Jonathan Keane from The Lodge at Ashford Castle in Cong, fell in love with the beautiful, handcrafted pieces of ancient bog oak. He bought a piece and used it in his cookery demo a short while later, and while he decorated little appetizers on the old piece of wood, the student explained to the audience, how he found the pieces and how he treated the old bog oak.

While networking is one aspect of the festival, there are several others, like soaking up knowledge through talks and cookery demos; getting to know small producers and their products, and being able to ask them all kinds of questions right there and then; and tasting wonderful samples of what the sea and the Irish soil have to offer.
This year’s festival motto is “Taste the Atlantic – a Seafood Journey” which is reflected in the cookery demos given by chefs Niall Sabongi (The Klaw Café) and Trevis Gleason (of the cook book “Dingle Dinners”). Whiskey is another focus, and Gleason will hold a workshop on this subject for anybody interested in uisce beatha.
One interesting talk with the title “Human Diet and Technological Innovation: learning to eat like humans again” will be given by American archaeologist and director of the Easter Shore Food Lab Bill Schindler who featured in the History Channel series called “The Great Human Race”.
Whilst the festival is taking place in the Pavilion in Lisdoonvarna, it will kick off on the Friday night with a trip to the smallest of the Aran Island where a seafood dinner will be waiting for the participants.
During the talks and cookery demos over the weekend, there will also be an Artisan Food Producers’ and Farmers’ Market on where produce and products from County Clare and further afield, and even from Italy, are featured.
A pop-up café will ensure that the visitors can rest and refresh, and kids’ activities will give parents a bit of a respite as well as time to take it all in.
And of course, the Burren Slow Food Festival would not be complete without the traditional Burren Slow Food Banquet which will take place on Saturday night in the Burren Storehouse.
