October Bank Holiday Weekend will see the 8th Annual Year of the Burren Food Fayre. This food themed weekend #TasteWithoutWaste encompasses a Foraging Walk with Oonagh O’Dwyer of Wild Kitchen, a foraging walk with Lisa Guinana from Irish Herbal Roots, food stalls and chef demonstrations. It is an opportunity for local producers to showcase their range of local produce from the Burren region.
Each year on the October Bank Holiday weekend The Burren Food Fayre plays a part in the festivities for the Winterage Festival, which is celebrated in the towns and villages of the Burren. This harvest celebration , at the end of the growing season, emphasises the unique way of farming on the limestone land, culminating in a cattle drive to the uplands.
Eight years ago, the Burren Beo organisation instigated this idea of drawing in the communities of the Burren area to make a collective impact. They asked all the towns and villages to choose a theme that would reflect their community. So Lisdoonvarna selected the theme of ‘Food’ and the Conservation Advocacy subgroup of the Burren Ecotourism Network developed this theme into the Food Fayre based in the Pavilion. Seven years on we have developed and added to the format of the Burren Food Fayre so that it now spans two days and attracts both locals and tourists. This becomes the second major Food festival in the Burren bookending the foodie season in the area at the other end of the season from the Burren Slow Food festival in May
The festival kicks off on Saturday evening at the Burren Storehouse with the launch of the Burren Dinners Book, a collaboration between the Burren Food Trail members with author & chef Trevis Gleason. The book will be launched by Brian McDermott Donegal based celebrity chef, author and proprietor of the Foyle Hotel. Brian will also be in attendance on the Sunday market at the Pavillion in Lisdoonvarna were he will do a cooking demo with one of the book’s recipes. The Food Market on Sunday is free to attend for all and it will include Food and Craft stalls, with a special Vegetarian Street Food section, cooking demos, outdoor food trucks, and live music to suit all taste buds.
